It takes all of us to make a difference in the lives of our patients. Regardless of your language ability, previous experience, or current location, we are open to discussing new volunteer opportunities that fit your interests and our mission.
Some of our current volunteers serve as community champions who connect us with key organizations and possibilities, language interpreters who help patients access medical and community needs, and writers who keep us all informed of current issues in the farmworker community by contributing to our blog. See below for other suggestions on volunteer positions!
Manna Shopping and Pick-Up
Vecinos has an account and a weekly shopping appointment at Manna Food Bank in Asheville. We welcome any volunteer with access to a truck or van who would be able to drive to Manna, pick-up food, and deliver the food to the Cullowhee United Methodist Church on the campus of WCU.
Frequency: any Thursday, Monthly, Biweekly, or up to once a week
Five in ten farmworkers identify as food insecure. Vecinos combats that statistic by working closely with Manna Food Bank and several Cullowhee-area churches and gardens to provide fresh produce, meat, and groceries to 40 families each month. We serve families in the Cullowhee/Tuckaseegee area and the Cherokee area.
We are looking for folks who can help us create the food boxes for families. This position requires flexibility on Thursday afternoons, usually between 1 and 4 pm. No heavy lifting or language skills required.
Volunteers with an SUV or truck who would be able to deliver boxes of food to these families would be a great fit for delivering food boxes. No language skills are needed and the deliveries to each area are every-other-week, with one delivery route each week, so if you live in the Cullowhee or Cherokee areas, this would be perfect for you!
Assist with medical interpretation at one of our clinics. Must be bilingual and interpretation experience is helpful but not necessary. Our outreach staff is highly trained in medical interpretation and can provide informal training to volunteers.
Connect Vecinos with any politicians, musicians, artists, authors, medical providers, or business owners you may know personally who would be willing to help further our cause, organize a fundraiser, or raise awareness about the mission of the program.
